Expert Pool Closing That Protects Your Investment

Rhode Island winters are brutal on pools. Freezing temperatures, ice expansion, snow loads, and months of harsh weather can cause thousands of dollars in damage to pools that aren’t properly winterized. Pool closing isn’t optional in our climate—it’s essential investment protection that prevents freeze damage to plumbing and equipment, liner damage from ice and improper water levels, structural stress from snow and ice loads, algae growth under covers, and equipment deterioration from exposure. The relatively modest investment in professional closing service is insurance against expensive repairs come spring.

At Signature Pool & Spas, we’ve been closing pools throughout Rhode Island for over 25 years, protecting them through countless harsh winters including some of the most severe on record. We’ve seen every type of winter damage pools can experience, and we know exactly what’s required to prevent these problems. Our closing process is thorough, methodical, and designed specifically for Rhode Island’s challenging seasonal conditions.

Many homeowners underestimate what proper pool closing requires. It’s not simply throwing a cover over the pool and hoping for the best. Effective winterization requires understanding how freezing affects different pool systems, knowing proper chemical treatment for months of storage, having specialized equipment for blowing out plumbing lines, understanding water level requirements for different pool types, and having quality covers and installation materials. Without this knowledge and equipment, DIY closing often leaves pools vulnerable to preventable damage.

The cost of professional closing is minimal compared to potential repair expenses from inadequate winterization. A single freeze-damaged pump or filter can cost hundreds to replace. Liner damage from improper closing can mean thousands for emergency replacement. Plumbing repairs from frozen lines often require excavation and extensive work. Professional closing eliminates these risks, providing peace of mind that your pool is properly protected regardless of how harsh the winter becomes.

Our Comprehensive Pool Closing Process

Our pool closing service follows a proven process refined over decades of experience in Rhode Island’s demanding climate.

1. Thorough Cleaning

We begin by completely cleaning your pool, removing all debris, leaves, and sediment. We vacuum the entire pool floor thoroughly, brush all surfaces including walls and steps, skim the surface completely, and empty skimmer and pump baskets. Starting winter with a clean pool prevents organic matter from decomposing under the cover and causing staining or algae issues. Clean water is also easier to treat chemically and balance properly for storage.

2. Comprehensive Chemical Treatment

Pool water needs special treatment to remain stable and protected through months without maintenance. We add winterizing chemicals specifically formulated for long-term storage, which include chlorine shock to eliminate contaminants and provide residual sanitization, algaecide to prevent algae growth during dormant months, pH adjusters to establish ideal storage levels, and specialty winterizing products that protect against staining and scale formation. This chemical treatment is more intensive than regular maintenance because it must protect your water for 5-6 months without adjustment.

3. Equipment Winterization

Freezing water expands with tremendous force, easily cracking pumps, filters, heaters, and other equipment if water remains trapped inside. We systematically winterize all equipment by draining pumps completely and removing drain plugs, backwashing and draining filters, draining heaters and heat exchangers, removing water from chlorinators and feeders, disconnecting and draining automatic cleaners, and storing removable equipment items safely. Each component receives attention to ensure no water remains that could freeze and cause damage.

4. Plumbing Line Blowout

Underground plumbing lines must be cleared of water to prevent freeze damage. We use professional air compressors and specialized fittings to blow out all plumbing lines, including return lines from equipment to pool, suction lines from skimmers and drains, and any additional plumbing for features like waterfalls or spas. Once lines are blown clear, we install winter plugs in all openings to prevent water from re-entering lines. We also add pool-safe antifreeze to lines where appropriate for additional freeze protection.

5. Water Level Adjustment

Proper water level during winter depends on your pool type and cover. For most pools with solid covers, we lower water below skimmer level to prevent freeze damage to skimmers while maintaining enough water to support the cover. For pools with mesh covers, different levels may be appropriate. We adjust to the optimal level for your specific situation, balancing freeze protection with structural support.

6. Cover Installation

Your winter cover is critical protection that must be installed correctly. We carefully position covers to ensure complete pool coverage, secure covers using appropriate anchors, weights, or water bags, adjust tension and fit for proper drainage, inspect cover condition and identify any damage needing repair, and ensure covers can withstand expected snow and ice loads. A poorly installed cover can dump debris into your pool, allow excessive snow accumulation, or blow off during winter storms. Professional installation ensures your cover performs as intended.

7. Final Inspection & Documentation

Before leaving, we conduct a final walkthrough to ensure everything is complete. We verify all equipment is properly drained and protected, confirm all plugs and caps are installed correctly, check cover installation and security, document any repairs or upgrades recommended for spring, and answer any questions about winter care or what to expect.

When to Schedule Your Pool Closing

Optimal closing timing balances maximizing your swimming season against protecting your pool before freezing weather arrives. In Southern Rhode Island, most closings occur between mid-September and late October, with peak demand around Columbus Day weekend.

Closing too early sacrifices swimming opportunities during beautiful early fall weather when water temperatures remain comfortable and days can be gorgeous. Closing too late risks freeze damage if unexpected cold snaps bring hard freezes before winterization is complete. The ideal window is typically late September through mid-October, after swimming season has ended but before consistently freezing nighttime temperatures arrive.

We monitor weather forecasts and typically recommend scheduling closing when extended forecasts show cooling trends and nighttime temperatures approaching the mid-30s. Once temperatures drop to freezing, equipment becomes vulnerable and closing becomes more urgent. However, we also accommodate customers who want to close earlier for travel, convenience, or personal preference.

Our closing schedule fills quickly during peak season in October, and appointments become limited as demand increases. We strongly recommend scheduling your closing by early September to secure your preferred timing. This advance scheduling also gives us flexibility to adjust dates if weather patterns change or you decide to extend your season.

For customers planning to close extremely late (November or later), understand that while we’ll accommodate your schedule when possible, late closing carries increased risk. If freezing weather arrives before closing is complete, damage can occur. We recommend erring toward earlier closing rather than pushing the season too far.

Winter Pool Covers: Protection You Can Trust

Winter covers are your pool’s primary protection against harsh weather, debris accumulation, and winter damage. Quality covers properly installed make an enormous difference in how your pool survives winter and how easily it opens in spring.

Solid Safety Covers

Premium solid covers provide complete debris protection while offering safety features that prevent accidental submersion. These covers are anchored securely to your deck using brass anchors installed around the pool perimeter. They support significant weight, can be walked on safely, keep out all debris and sunlight, and typically last 10-15 years with proper care. Solid safety covers are ideal for families with children or pets, properties with significant tree coverage, and owners who want maximum protection and convenience.

Mesh Safety Covers

Mesh covers provide safety features similar to solid covers while allowing water to drain through. They prevent debris accumulation while eliminating standing water on the cover surface. Mesh covers are lighter than solid covers, require no pumping of standing water, allow some sunlight penetration that may affect algae growth, and also last 10-15 years typically. They work well for properties with good drainage and customers who prefer avoiding water pumping.

Standard Winter Covers

Traditional tarp-style covers secured with water bags or cables provide basic protection at lower cost. They keep out most debris, require water pumping after rain or snow melt, typically last 5-7 years, and offer no safety features. These covers work for budget-conscious customers without safety concerns, though they require more attention during winter.

We can assess your current cover condition during closing and recommend replacement if needed. We also sell and install high-quality covers from trusted manufacturers including LoopLoc and Merlin, ensuring you have protection appropriate for your situation.

Outstanding Service and Value

Overall, outstanding. They are the closest pool company to my house. Staff is knowledgeable and friendly. I recently started buying chemicals there instead of from the company who installed my pool. The service is faster,, prices are better, and the customer service is outstanding. Im making the switch to Signature.
